Mustangs Jump to #1 in New Regional Poll

WICHITA FALLS, TX -

Midwestern State jumped three spots to No. 1 in the latest South Central Region Rankings released Wednesday afternoon by the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Committee.

The Mustangs extended their current winning streak to four games with victories over Texas A&M-Kingsville and last week's No. 1 team -- the Angelo State Rams -- to claim at least a share of its ninth Lone Star Conference championship while improving to 20-5 on the season.

The Mustangs can clinch an outright league title with a win over Cameron in the regular season finale Saturday at Aggie Gym in Lawton. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.

MSU holds the top spot by the narrowest of margins owning an in-region winning percentage of .737 (14-5), overall D2 winning percentage of .762 (16-5), a .549 overall D2 strength of schedule, a performance indicator of 15.333 and a region RPI of .580.

Angelo State slipped to second with an in-region winning percentage of .706 (12-5), overall D2 winning percentage of .762 (16-5), a .551 overall D2 strength of schedule, a performance indicator of 15.524 and a region RPI of .599.

The Mustangs and Rams (20-5) are trailed by Fort Lewis (23-3), Tarleton State (19-7), Colorado Mines (21-6), Dallas Baptist (20-6), Lubbock Christian (18-8) and Arkansas-Fort Smith (20-6).

West Texas A&M (20-9) and St. Edward's (Texas) (17-9) round out the rankings at Nos. 9 and 10, respectively.

The South Central Region consists of the Lone Star, Rocky Mountain Athletic and Heartland conferences. The winners of the each league's postseason tournament gains an automatic bid into the postseason while five others earn at-large access.

The top eight teams from each of the eight regions advance to the postseason which begins March 12-15 at campus sites of the top-ranked team in each region.

The winners of each regional gain a berth in the Elite Eight which is set for Dr. Pepper Arena in Frisco, Texas from March 23-26.
