MSU Softball Sweeps LSC-Opening Doubleheader

PORTALES, NM (KAUZ) -

Vinson Breaks Career HR Record in LSC Opener

Senior third baseman Katelyn Vinson made history Friday afternoon as the Southlake native inked her name at the top of the Midwestern State record books with her 57th career home run, sparking 10 runs in the final three innings in a 13-4 win over Eastern New Mexico in the Lone Star Conference opener.

Vinson's school record mark came just three games after matching the previous record of 56, set by Kim Jerrick in 2014, where she recorded a pair of home runs in a 17-2 win over Colorado State-Pueblo on Feb. 14 at the WT Invitational in Canyon. She also came one RBI short of tying Chelsea Wall's single-game school record of seven set back on Feb. 16, 2014 against Northeastern State.

Senior center fielder Haley Howerton matched a school record Friday afternoon with her four runs scored to become just the third Mustang to accomplish the feat, joining Katelyn Vinson (Apr. 6, 2013 vs. Texas Woman's) and Maranda Bishop (Mar. 3, 2009 vs. Southwestern Okla.).

On the day, Midwestern State (13-8, 1-0) recorded four home runs to tie for the fifth most in a single game in program history. In the circle, junior Erin Knox moved to 5-0 on the season by tying a season-high five strikeouts in the complete game effort. Howerton, Knox and Vinson each posted three hits to lead the Mustangs.

Vinson's three-run shot broke a 3-3 game in the top of the fifth, following singles by Howerton and junior left fielder Taylor Bermudes, to put the Mustangs back in front at 6-3.

The three-run inning for the Mustangs followed a three-run frame for Eastern New Mexico (7-8, 0-1) in the fourth behind three singles, an error and a walk. A one-out walk and single put two on for the Greyhounds in the inning before a single for third baseman Morgan Green and an outfield error gave ENMU its first run of the game. A third-straight single for the Greyhounds and a grounder to second erased the Mustangs lead to even the contest at 3-3 heading into the fifth inning.

After Vinson's three-run shot, the Greyhounds cut into the three-run deficit in the bottom half of the frame. A pair of walks followed by a single and a second MSU outfield error plated the fourth run for ENMU.

Vinson added to the MSU lead in the sixth with a two-RBI double to left center to extend the advantage to 8-4.

The Mustangs offense was far from over as the Maroon and Gold put up a five-run frame in their final at bat. A Knox single through the right side set up a two-run shot for freshman right fielder Taylor Mordecai to left center to make it a 10-4 game with one out. Howerton then recorded her first triple of the season to drive in another run before a two-run homer for junior left fielder Taylor Bermudes capped off the MSU scoring for a 13-4 final.

In the first inning, Howerton denied the Greyhounds their first run of the game, turning a double play with a throw home for the final out of the inning. The Mustangs carried that momentum into the second inning as Knox lifted a 2-2 pitch over the center field fence for a 1-0 score to lead off the frame.

Midwestern stretched its lead to 2-0 in the third as Vinson drove a pitch to the right field fence for a double to score Howerton, who singled earlier in the inning.

With two on and two outs in the fourth, a single down the left field line for freshman second baseman Misty Muniz added another run for the Mustangs to push the advantage to 3-0 before ENMU evened the game at three apiece.
