Mustangs take LSC title outright, beat Cameron 79-59

LAWTON, OK (KAUZ) - Midwestern State closed strong in both halves to finish off Cameron 79-59 Saturday afternoon at Aggie Gym.

With the win, the Mustangs claimed an outright LSC title improving to 21-5 on the season and 10-4 in league play also cinching the No. 1 seeding next week's LSC Postseason Tournament in Allen.

Midwestern will hold a net cutting party to celebrate its conference championship Monday night at 7 p.m. in D.L. Ligon Coliseum. The general public is invited.

MSU takes on Eastern New Mexico Wednesday night at the Allen Event Center. Tipoff is set for 8:30 p.m.

It's the Mustangs' ninth Lone Star Conference title and seventh in the last 10 years.

Senior guard Hershell Grant scored 10 of his 16 points in the opening half to help MSU erase a 10-point deficit and close the half on a 10-0 run to lead 31-24 at the half.

MSU got a traditional three-point play by Bretson McNeal at the beginning of the second half to take a 34-24 lead, but Cameron scored the next eight points and pulled to within 37-35 on a Cameron Lee 3-pointer at the 15:07 mark.

Junior guard Sheldon Hagigal had the answer knocking down the first of his three 3-pointers over a 4-minute, 18-second stretch to spur a 13-7 run as the Mustangs pushed the lead back out to 11 at 50-39 with 11:36 to go.

The Aggies had one more push in them pulling off a 10-2 run to get back to within a possession after Lee converted a three-point play to CU back tow thin 52-49 with 9:44 to play.

Midwestern dominated the rest of the way outscoring the Aggies 27-10 including a pair of massive follow dunks by DeVaughn Jones and Trevor Fuller to put away the victory.

Senior guard Jordan Stevens chipped in 12 points and four assists, while senior forward Khapri Alston added nine points and 12 rebounds.

Jamaal Brantley scored 19 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead Cameron which fell to 15-11 and 8-6.
