Mustangs Up 3 Spots in NABC Coaches' Poll

WICHITA FALLS, TX - Midwestern State pulled the No. 11 ranking in the final regular season National Association of Basketball Coaches' Division II Rankings released Tuesday afternoon.

The Mustangs clinched an outright Lone Star Conference championship with a 79-59 win over Cameron Saturday at Aggie Gym in Lawton to close the regular season with a 21-5 record.

It was MSU's ninth overall LSC title and the seventh in the last 10 years.

MSU is one of five teams from the South Central Region to receive mention in the poll joining No. 8 Fort Lewis (Colo.) and No. 16 Angelo State (Texas) while Colorado Mines and Tarleton State (Texas) are receiving votes.

West Liberty (W. Va.) regained the top spot after claiming a 82-74 win over previous No. 1 Wheeling Jesuit (W. Va.) in a key meeting in the much touted Mountain East Conference.

Wheeling Jesuit dropped to the No. 4 position just ahead of another conference foe -- Fairmont State (W. Va.) -- as the MEC owns three of the five top spots in the country.

Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) (26-2) moved up one spot to No. 2 after closing the regular season on a 16-game winning streak, while Augustana (S.D.) took over the No. 4 position after improving to 26-2 with Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament wins over Minnesota Crookston and Sioux Falls.

D2 Media Poll Sees MSU at #7

Midwestern State moved up one spot to No. 7 in the latest D2 Media Poll released Tuesday afternoon by the D2 Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America.

Augustana (S.D.) regained the No. 1 position after improve to 26-2 with Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament wins over Minnesota Crookston and Sioux Falls. The Vikings received 10 of the 14 first-place votes.

Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) (26-2) moved up one spot to No. 2 closing the regular season on a 16-game winning streak, while West Liberty (W. Va.) moved up one spot to No. 3 after claiming a win over former No. 1 Wheeling Jesuit (W. Va.) last week.

The Cardinals slipped four spots to No. 5 after taking their second Mountain East Conference loss, while Western Oregon (1 first-place vote) remained at No. 4.

Midwestern State opens Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament play Wednesday at the Allen Event Center against Eastern New Mexico. Tipoff is set for 8:30 p.m.

With a win, the Mustangs advance to face either West Texas A&M or Cameron in the semifinal round also at 8:30. The championship game is set for Saturday at 5:30.
