MSU Softball Drops Final 2 Games to West Texas

WICHITA FALLS, TX - West Texas A&M's Lacey Taylor belted a grand slam in the eighth inning of the nightcap as the top-ranked Lady Buffs completed a sweep of Midwestern State 6-3 and 7-3 Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

WT improved to 24-0 on the season and 8-0 in Lone Star while the Mustangs dropped to 15-13 and 3-5.

Midwestern rallied to send the second game into extra innings fueled by senior Katelyn Vinson's 60th career home run in the first inning while Taylor Bermudes drove in runs in the third and seventh innings to knot the game at 3-3.

West Texas A&M scored seven runs on three long balls as Ashley Hardin hit a two-run shot in the second and Brittany Geile had a solo shot in the sixth before Taylor blasted a grand slam to left field in the eighth inning to supply the game winner.

MSU starter Tayler Jerrick worked seven quality innings permitting just three runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. Freshman Peyton Helton was saddled with the loss to fall to 4-7 allowing four runs — two earned — on one hit with two walks in an inning of relief.

Taylor struck for a run-scoring double to highlight a three-run third inning in the first game for West Texas A&M.

Bermudez put the Mustangs on the board with a solo shot to left field in the fourth inning as MSU clawed back to within a run with two runs in the sixth keyed by Baylee Voigt's RBI-double down the left-field line to pull MSU back to within 4-3.

WT's Kourtney Coveney drove in a run with a single to center field in the sixth then Taylor tacked on another RBI with a  single to left field in the seventh. Allie Smith closed out scoring with a run-scoring double to the left-field gap to give the Lady Buffs a 6-3 edge.

Midwestern State left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh.

WT's Kilee Halbert improved to 10-0 on the season allowing three runs on five hits in five innings, while Tori Bayer came on to pitch two scoreless frames to secure her third save.

Freshman Mackenzie Harris took the loss for MSU to fall to 4-2 allowing six runs on seven hits in seven innings. She posted six strikeouts and seven walks.

Taylor finished a combined 4-for-7 with a double, a homer and six RBIs to pace West Texas A&M.

Bermudez collected two hits over the two games with a homer and three RBIs.

Midwestern State takes Texas Woman's for four-game set Friday and Saturday in Denton.
