Mustangs extend win streak to four with sweep of UTPB

The 22nd-ranked Midwestern State women's tennis team extended their winning streak to four matches Friday evening as the Mustangs earned their second sweep of the day with a 9-0 victory over Texas-Permian Basin at the Bush Tennis Center.

Lauren Pineda continued her winning streak, now owning a combined record of 11-0 this season. Pineda earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles while teaming up with Amy Clifton in doubles for an 8-1 win on court two to help Midwestern State (5-1) to the sweep. UTPB dropped to 0-9 on the season. 

The Mustangs extended several winning streaks in doubles play with Maddie Schorlemmer and Greta Lazzarotto taking an 8-2 victory on court three for their third-straight win. Lindsay Nochowicz and Eirini Kontaki improved to 4-0 on the season at No. 1 doubles with an 8-5 win.

Kontaki clinched the match for the Mustangs at No. 2 singles, posting a 6-1, 6-3 victory. Lazzarotto came away with a 7-5, 6-1 win in her first appearance at the top of the lineup while Lindsay Nochowicz, Abby White and Alexis Arrieta all pushed their winning streaks to three matches to complete the sweep.

Midwestern State returns to action Sunday at 2 p.m. when the Mustangs host in-region foe Colorado Mesa at the MSU Tennis Center.

Mustangs win third straight with sweep of Broncos

Midwestern State cruised to its third-straight win Friday morning with a 9-0 victory over NJCAA No. 9 New Mexico Military Institute in a neutral site meeting at the Bush Tennis Center.

Midwestern State (4-1) set the tone early, recording a pair of 8-0 sweeps at No. 2 and 3 doubles. Senior Maddie Schorlemmer and freshman Greta Lazzarotto moved to 4-1 on the season with their win at No. 3 while senior Lauren Pineda and sophomore Amy Clifton remained a perfect 5-0 with the win on court two. Senior Lindsay Nochowicz and freshman Eirini Kontaki posted an 8-2 at No. 1 to move to 3-0 this season and complete the doubles sweep for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs continued their dominance in singles play, earning straight-set wins across the board. Schorlemmer, ranked 37th nationally in singles, moved to 3-0 at No. 1 this season with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Thea Minor to cap off the 9-0 sweep over New Mexico Military Institute (4-4). Kontaki came through with the clincher for MSU with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lorraine Banimataku at No. 3 before Pineda improved to 4-0 on the season with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Lorish Puluspene at No. 4 singles.

Midwestern State will wrap up the day at 2 p.m. with a match against host Texas-Permian Basin.

Davidson earns 100th career win in Mustangs sweep over UTPB

Senior Kyle Davidson became just the 10th Mustang in Midwestern State men's tennis history to earn 100 career wins Friday evening as the Garland native teamed up with Ramon Toyos at No. 1 doubles to reach the 100-win plateau in a 9-0 sweep for the 12th-ranked Mustangs over Texas-Permian Basin.

With the win Friday, Davidson joined Jason Peters (1998-2001), Michael Mills (1999-2002), Brett Emerson (2004-07), Zac Dillard (2005-08), Ryan Gillen (1999-2003), Brian Holcomb (1997-2000), Victor Vidal (2001-04), Kacper Boborykin (2012-15) and Charles Van Swelm (2005-07) in the 100-win club. For his career, Davidson carries a 45-29 record in singles play while totaling a 55-25 doubles mark.

Midwestern State (4-1) carried a 3-0 lead after doubles with Zack Santagate and Dillon Pineda coming away with a win on court two and Radu Popa and Chris Norrie pairing up for a win at No. 3.

In singles, Toyos moved to 2-0 at the top position with a 6-2, 6-0 victory to lead up to Norrie's 6-1, 6-0 clincher at No. 4. The MSU freshmen closed out the match for the Mustangs with Popa, Pineda, Dylan Hall and Benjamin Neander claiming wins to complete the sweep.

With the loss, Texas-Permian Basin fell to 2-4 on the season.

Midwestern State returns to action Sunday when the Mustangs host Colorado Mesa in a 2 p.m. match at the MSU Tennis Center.

Mustangs rout Broncos with 9-0 sweep Friday

The No. 12 Midwestern State men's tennis team returned to their winning ways Friday morning as the Mustangs posted a 9-0 sweep over NJCAA No. 7 New Mexico Military Institute at the Bush Tennis Center.

Senior Kyle Davidson came within one win of 100 career victories Friday with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles with junior Ramon Toyos. With one more win, Davidson could become just the 10th Mustang in MSU men's tennis history to reach the 100-win plateau.

Midwestern State (3-1) took little time in opening up a sizeable advantage on New Mexico Military Institute (1-3), recording an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles and earning a win by default at No. 3.

The Mustangs coasted in singles play with four straight-set wins, a super tiebreaker victory and win by default at No. 6. Freshman Dylan Hall clinched the win for MSU with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 3. Toyos, the 39th-ranked singles player in the country, recorded a 6-2, 6-3 win at the top of the lineup while junior Chris Norrie posted a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 to tie Toyos for a team-high three singles wins on the season.

Midwestern State will wrap up the day at 2 p.m. with a match against host Texas-Permian Basin.
