Mustangs claim tri-championship at Midwestern State Invitational

WICHITA FALLS, TX -

Midwestern State overcame a pair of rough finishes on the 18th hole to grab a portion of a three-way tie for the win in the MSU Invitational Tuesday afternoon at the Wichita Falls Country Club.

The Mustangs suffered finishes of 7 and 8 in each round but still managed to claim their third team win of the season tying Dallas Baptist and Arkansas Tech with a two-round total of 615 (+39).

"We played very well and our girls competed very well," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "The weather played a role today, but our girls battled."

It's the third time in the last four years for the Mustangs to win their home invitiational also claiming victories in 2013 and 2015.

Junior Sierra Campbell tied for second with Allison Howarth of St. Mary's (Texas) with a two-round total of 149 (+5) despite taking an 8 on the Par-4, 356-yard 18th hole. The Rio Rancho, N.M. native played consistently throughout the previous 17 holes while marking 15 pars.

"Sierra played incredibly well this whole tournament," Ray said. "It was a just a tough finishing hole. Unfortunately, it got us."

The duo finished four strokes out of first as Arkansas Tech's Anna Frandsen carded rounds of 69 and 76 to earn top medalist honors with a two-round total of 145 (+1).

The 18th hole also gave fellow junior Kellie Martin fits in Monday's opening as the Burleson native penned a seven, but fought back to mark rounds of 77 and 80 for a two-round total of 157 (+13) to finish tied for 21st.

"Kellie played very well to give us two very strong rounds particularly with the wind picking up today," Ray said.

Freshman May Chimsuti closed strong with back-to-back birdies on her final two holes to finish tied for a 11th with a two-round total of 154 (+10). The Muang, Thailand native logged six of her tournament-best seven birdies in the final round recording a 4-over 76.

"May had a great tournament," Ray said. "With this wind and the way she finished was very impressive."

Junior Hayley Dambold fired rounds of 77 and 82 for a total of 159 (+15) to tie for 30th, while sophomore Sarah Moore logged scores of 74 and 89 to tie for 45th with a 163 (+19).

"This was a very good tournament against a good field," Ray said. "There were a lot of compliments for the country club and the City of Wichita Falls."

NO TIEBREAKER: Dallas Baptist was awarded the first-place trophy by virtue of having the lowest throw-out score in Tuesday's final round (Brinn Fariss/83), while Arkansas Tech earned runner-up honors (Caroline Fredensborg/87) and MSU was third (Sarah Moore/89). All three teams are credited with a win through GolfStat.
