LAWTON, OK (KAUZ) -

Newschannel 6 is celebrating our military. Wednesday we recognized United States Army SSG Gary Phillips as one of the “Heroes of Texoma.” SSG Phillips graduated from Hirschi High School in 2006.

Shortly after, he and his wife Sharonica welcomed their first child, JaSean. Sharonica said after the birth of their son, Gary wanted to take the opportunity to serve our country.

“I remember him always talking about… “You know I want to show JaSean I can do this.” Sharonica said.

In September of 2009 Gary joined the United States Army. His time in the service has taken his family all over the globe. They have lived in Germany. He served in Poland, Israel and is now based Fort Sill.

“We had fun over there. We got to travel and see a lot of places,” Sharonica said.

SSG Phillips is currently deployed in South Korea while his wife Sharonica works for the VA here in Texoma.

“I kind of knew what to expect, it’s just different with the deployments and being the responsible one, having to be the single mommy while he’s gone,” Sharonica said.

But Sharonica said Gary does his duties as a father while serving our country overseas.

“He is an awesome father. He makes sure he puts time aside for the kids. We have family night on Friday nights, so we try and keep our routine the same even though he’s gone,” Sharonica said.

During our interview Gary called via FaceTime. This is the type of communication Sharonica and her children cherish with him being so far away. Soon, Gary will have to decide whether he will stay in the U.S. Army or not. Regardless of his decision, Sharonica said he is a good man, good husband and great father.

“I will always support you in whatever you decide to do and I am very proud of you for doing this,” Sharonica said.

SSG Gary Phillips, Newschannel 6 thanks you for your service. If someone you know deserves recognition as part of our “Heroes of Texoma” segment, send us an E-mail to News@KAUZ.com
