SHAWNEE, OK (KAUZ) - Senior third baseman Katelyn Vinson tied the Lone Star Conference career home run record while freshman pitcher Makenzi Harris tossed a two-hitter to lead Midwestern State to a 14-3 run-rule victory in five innings over Oklahoma Baptist in game one of a doubleheader Wednesday evening at Lady Bison Park.
Vinson's 62nd career homer came in the second inning with a grand slam to left field to give Midwestern State (17-16) a 6-0 lead. The Southlake native moved into a tie with former West Texas A&M standout Renee Erwin, who finished atop of the LSC home run standings during her senior season in 2015.
In the circle, Harris (6-3) allowed hits in the second and fifth innings while finishing with three walks and a strikeout on her stat line.
The Mustangs loaded the bases with one out in the second inning before a single by senior center fielder Haley Howerton plated the first two runs of the ballgame. A walk for junior left fielder Taylor Bermudes filled the bases once again before Vinson blasted her third career grand slam and first since her freshman season to match the LSC career record with her ninth long ball of the season.
Oklahoma Baptist (6-14) scored all of its runs in the second frame as a pair of errors by the Mustangs allowed the Lady Bison to put up three unearned runs to cut the MSU lead in half at 6-3.
A Vinson walk led up to a home run for junior designated hitter Baylee Voigt in the top of the fourth, stretching the Mustangs advantage to 8-3.
Midwestern capped off the night with a six-run frame in the fifth to earn the run rule. With the bases loaded, the Mustangs plated their first run on a throwing error in the OBU infield before Bermudes drove in two additional runs with a single to center field. A single for junior first baseman Erin Knox pushed the MSU lead to 12-3 before Harris recorded a two-RBI double to left center for a final 14-3.
Home runs for junior Baylee Voigt and freshman Taylor Mordecai lifted Midwestern State to a doubleheader sweep of Oklahoma Baptist Wednesday night in a 2-0 victory at Lady Bison Park.
Voigt put Midwestern State (18-16) in front for good in the second inning with a bomb to center field for her sixth home run of the season and a 1-0 lead for the Maroon and Gold. It was the second home run of the night for Voigt, also recording one in a 14-3 run-rule victory for the Mustangs in game one.
Mordecai added some cushion for the Midwestern in the seventh inning as she lifted a pitch over the center field fence for her fifth long ball of the year to make it a final 2-0.
Oklahoma Baptist (6-15) outhit the Mustangs, 6-4, but junior hurler Erin Knox limited the Lady Bison to just one extra base hit while fanning four batters in a complete game effort to improve to 6-2 on the season. McKenzie Jones (2-7) was saddled with the loss for OBU despite a 10-strikeout performance.
Midwestern State returns home to Mustangs Park Friday and Saturday for a four-game series with rival Tarleton State. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday while play gets underway Saturday at 2 p.m.
