MSU Women's Golf 3rd in Bartlesville

Moore takes 5th, leads Mustangs to 3rd-place team showing at Hillcat Classic

BARTLESVILLE, OK (KAUZ) - Midwestern State had three players listed among the first nine on the individual leader board following Tuesday's final round in the Hillcat Classic played at the par-72, 5,959-yard Hillcrest Country Club.
But, in the end, the Mustangs couldn't go low enough to hang with Oklahoma Christian falling to third with a two-round, team total of 674 (+98) after holding the opening round lead.
"We just really struggled today," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "The golf course played really difficult. We just didn't play as well today as we did yesterday. A couple of other teams did."
Sophomore Sarah Moore continued her stellar first-round play with a solid 3-over-par performance on the front nine then went 10-over on the back nine to finish fifth on the leader board with a two-round total of 159 (+15).
St. Edward's freshman Ana Sofia Benavides scored two of the five sub-80 rounds to claim top individual medalist honors marking a 76 and 78 for a 10-over-par total of 154 to finish three strokes in front of Oklahoma Christian junior Allison Sell, who fired a tournament-best 73 in Tuesday's final round.
Sell and teammate Audrey Meisch, who carded a 6-over 78 Tuesday, led the Eagles to a team tournament title clinching total of 316 (+28) in the final round to win the tournament by 18 strokes over St. Edward's.
"You have to give Oklahoma Christian credit," Ray said. "They had a couple of girls play outstanding on a really, really difficult golf course."
MSU junior Hayley Dambold match more with a 13-over-par score in the second to finish tied for seventh (168/+24) while junior Kellie Martin and freshman May Chimsuti also delivered countable scores in the second round.
"It was very windy again and we just couldn't avoid the big number," Ray said. "Every girl on our team had a couple of triples and maybe one quad."
Martin closed tied for ninth with a two-round total of 169 (+25), while Chimsuti tied for 18th with an overall total of 175 (+31).
Junior Sierra Campbell turned in her first non-countable score this season with an 87, but tied for 13th with a two-round total of 172 (+28). It snapped a 31-round streak of countable outings for Campbell.
"Hopefully we'll learn from it and keep working and get ready for the next tournament," Ray said.
Midwestern State competes in the Tarleton State Invitational at Harbor Lakes Golf Club in Granbury on April 11-12.
