Heroes of Texoma: Shawn Peterman

Heroes of Texoma: Shawn Peterman

BURKBURNETT, TX (KAUZ) - Newschannel 6 is honoring the "Heroes of Texoma." This week we're recognizing temporary veteran Shawn Peterman.
Shawn graduated from Burkburnett High School in 2006 and that fall joined the United States Air Force. Coming from a family with a strong military background, his parents were not surprised.
"Happy! In fact, I even put my uniform back on," Daniel Peterman, Shawn's father said.
"We were excited but yet a little apprehensive as well," Aida Peterman, Shawn's mother said.
His career in the service brought him to Sheppard Air Force Base, Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii and he was also deployed to Afghanistan.
"It was different. I know initially when I got over there it was kind of a surreal feeling. Seeing the difference in how they live and how we live and it's not even something that you can compare," Shawn Peterman said.
"He ran some missions over there that were pretty hairy and I just told him to keep your sense about yourself you know. Be smart," Daniel Peterman said.
After serving eight years Shawn was selected to be part of an ROTC scholarship program. This program allows Shawn to be detached from the USAF while attending MSU through the ROTC program through UNT. Upon graduation, Shawn will reenter the USAF as a Second Lieutenant.
"A big driving factor I think is my mom's dad. He got out as a Lieutenant Colonel and that is a long term goal. So we'll see where I'm at in 12 years," Shawn Peterman said.
    His family is very proud.
"I think he'll do great things for the Air Force," Aida Peterman said.
"I mean I couldn't ask for a better son," Daniel Peterman said.
If someone you know is deserving of recognition during our "Heroes of Texoma" segment, let us know by sending us an E-mail to News@KAUZ.com. If selected, we'll contact you for further opportunities.
