WICHITA FALLS, TX - The Midwestern State men's tennis team continued to rewrite the program record books Wednesday as the Mustangs earned their highest national ranking in school history after coming in at No. 11 in the Oracle/ITA Division II National Team Rankings, announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
The Mustangs climbed up one spot after appearing at No. 12 last month in the first set of spring rankings. Midwestern State is currently 7-4 on the season with three wins over top-45 teams.
Senior Kyle Davidson is ranked 44th in the national singles rankings with a 4-5 dual record and a pair of wins over nationally-ranked opponents while playing at the top position for the Mustangs. Davidson and junior Ramon Toyos climbed one spot to 19th in the doubles rankings, sporting a 7-4 record on court one this season.
MSU also remained atop the South Central Region rankings released last week with No. 12 Cameron coming in right behind the Mustangs. No. 27 St. Mary's, No. 28 Western New Mexico and No. 33 St. Edward's rounded out the top five in the regional poll.
Midwestern State wraps up a five-match road swing Friday as the Mustangs take on Colorado State-Pueblo and NCAA Division III Colorado College at the Pueblo City Park Tennis Complex.
The Midwestern State women's tennis team jumped two spots in the latest Oracle/ITA Division II National Team Rankings, climbing to No. 20 in Wednesday's poll released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Midwestern State is off to an 8-3 start to the season with losses to top-10 Saint Leo (Fla.) and Hawaii Pacific and NJCAA Tyler Junior College. The Mustangs earned a 6-3 upset win over then-No. 10 Southwest Baptist (Mo.) at the MSU Tennis Center last week for their first win over a top-10 program since 2007.
In the individual rankings, senior Maddie Schorlemmer climbed 10 spots to 27th in singles with a 5-4 dual play record including a 4-3 mark at No. 1. In doubles, senior Lindsay Nochowicz and freshman Eirini Kontaki moved into the rankings at No. 23 following a 6-3 start at the top position this season.
Midwestern State came in third in the South Central Region rankings released last week behind No. 12 St. Mary's (Texas) and No. 17 Cameron. The Mustangs appeared in front of three nationally-ranked programs in the regional poll in No. 41 St. Edward's (Texas), No. 43 Newman (Kan.) and No. 47 Dallas Baptist (Texas).
Midwestern State wraps up a five-match road swing this weekend when the Mustangs face Colorado State-Pueblo in a Friday matchup before taking on NCAA Division I Air Force Saturday in Colorado Springs.
