Bag The Butts Competition

Bag The Butts Competition

WICHITA COUNTY, TX (KAUZ) - More than half a million cigarette butts are deposited on our roadways each year, and it adds up to nearly a third of all the litter in Texas.
Naomi Barron, an Outreach Specialist, says people do not realize just how many cigarette butts are flicked out the window.
"Cigarette butts are the number one litter item in the world," says Barron. "And I don't think you really realize how many cigarette butts are out there until you are actually looking for them."
That is why the Wichita Falls-Wichita County Public Health District has partnered up with the Wichita County Tobacco Prevention and Control Coalition to bag the butts and stop smoking and littering.
"You come to the Health District, and you can grab a bag the butts kit," said Barron. "Or you can use your own materials, your own gloves and your own bag. Then you want to collect as many cigarette butts as you can."
Cigarette butts are not just another piece of trash.  They can also damage the environment.
"The plastic in the filters does not decompose," says Barron. "It takes many years for that to decompose, and many times, the wind and rain will actually run off into our water systems, and it creates toxicity in our water system."
Barron says they want to bring awareness, not to just littering, but smoking as well.
"We, the Tobacco Prevention and Control Coalition, are here for those that have made the hard choice to quit smoking," said Barron. "So we have free services for them as well."
Everyone who participates in "Bag the Butts" will receive prizes that range from pins and coasters to bumper stickers.
The winner of the competition will win a summer vacation themed gift basket.
The deadline is Friday and 5 p.m., and the winner will be announced at a health fair on Saturday.
It starts at 9 a.m. and runs until 1 p.m. at the Health District on 3rd Street.
