Baker Wins DBU Classic, Mustangs 3rd

IRVING, TX (KAUZ) - Midwestern State junior Jared Baker clinched his first collegiate win with an eagle on his final hole to finish at 8-under for two-stroke victory Tuesday in the Dallas Baptist Patriot Classic played at the par-72, 7,064-yard Hackberry Creek Country Club.

The Mustangs also enjoyed solid performances by juniors Colton Dorion and Thomas Smith to take third with a three-round team total of 870 (+6).

"This tournament should put us in the regional," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "We were on the edge but got three quality scores and a great second round yesterday."

Dorion recorded seven birdies and was 6-under before taking bogeys on his final two holes. The Surrey, British Columbia native logged rounds of 76, 71 and 68 to finish tied for seventh with a 1-under total of 215.

It was Dorion's second Top 10 finish this season lowering his team-best stroke average to 74.53. His 15 birdies matched Smith for a tournament-high.

Smith recovered from an opening round 79 to fire consecutive sub-par rounds at 67 and 71 to tie for 16th with a 1-over total of 217.

Baker claimed MSU's first top individual medalist honor of the season converting a strong start with matching career-low rounds of 68 before notching an even-par 72 in the third round.

The Holliday native notched sub-par scores in four of his last seven rounds boasting a stroke average 70.7 during the stretch. Baker's previous best finish came with an 8th-place showing at The Territory Classic in October of 2014.

Midwestern came within a stroke of team tournament champ Texas Wesleyan midway through the final round as the Rams held on for a four-stroke win carding team totals of 288, 277 and 298 for a 1-under total of 863.

Host Dallas Baptist placed second with a 3-over total of 867 which was three strokes better than MSU and Cameron which tied for third.

Junior Luke Thomas tied for 47th posting scores of 74, 73 and 83 for a three-round total of 230 (+14) while freshman Chance Craig struggled to scores of 81, 83 and 96.

Fellow frosh Clayton Meyers tied for 52nd posting tallies of 80, 76 and 75 for a three-round total of 231 (+5).

Midwestern next competes in the Lone Star Conference Championship played at Frisco Lakes Golf Club from April 18-20.
