Knox, Helton spur doubleheader sweep of Texas A&M-Commerce

WICHITA FALLS, TX - Midwestern State's Erin Knox hit two home runs and drove in six while Peyton Helton fanned a season-high 11 batters to spur a doubleheader sweep over Texas A&M-Commerce Friday night at Mustangs Park.

It was the third twin bill sweep for MSU during Lone Star Conference play as the Mustangs improved to 25-21 overall and 10-12 in league play.

The teams complete the four-game set Saturday at Mustangs Park with adjusted starting times of noon and 2 p.m. due to forecasted rain.

Knox slugged a three-run shot to put the Mustangs on the board in the bottom of the first inning and tagged on a two-run homer in the second inning to spur an 11-6 win in the opener for MSU.

The West native who now has a career-best nine homers this season added an RBI double in the sixth inning driving in a career-high six runs which was one shy of Chelsey Wall's program best seven RBIs set during the 2014 season.

Wall chipped in a two-run single to polish off a 5-run first for the Mustangs, while junior outfielder Taylor Bermudes launched her sixth long ball in the sixth inning.

Helton, who improved to 7-8, weaved a gem in the circle recording 11 strikeouts and didn't allow an earned run into the seventh inning. The strikeouts were the most since Laci Belovsky notched 11 against Angelo State on March 22, 2013.

Texas A&M-Commerce cashed in an error in the first inning then scored three runs in the sixth after Kylene Hatton extended the inning by reaching on a passed ball on a third strike. The Lions tallied on a two-run double by Megan Lynch and an RBI two bagger by Tyler Oppenheim.

Hatton drilled the first of her two homers during the twin bill on two-run shot to close out scoring in the seventh.

Midwestern State took advantage of Texas A&M-Commerce miscues to plate two runs in the first and sixth innings to take a 4-3 in the night cap.

The Mustangs scored a run on a wild pitch and another on a throwing error on the shortstop to take a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Hatton pulled the Lions even with her second two-run homer of the night in the fourth inning before the Mustangs took advantage of two errors on a single play in the sixth inning to put away the game.

Bermudes reached on a throwing error by the third baseman and advanced all the way to third as pinch runner Jennifer Quintero came plate ward on a throwing error by the shortstop to give the Mustangs a 3-2 lead.

Bermudes tacked on an insurance run on Amanda Thomas' sacrifice fly to center field.

It proved to be the winning run as Texas A&M-Commerce scored a single run in the top of the seventh.

MSU starter Makenzi Harris retired the first nine hitters she faced on the way to claiming her eighth win in the circle permitting three runs on just five hits in the complete game victory. Her first since March 19.

Senior center fielder Haley Howerton accounted for two of MSU's three hits against A&M-Commerce starter Selena Rima, who fell to 12-8 allowing four runs -- two earned -- on three this with five strikeouts in six innings.

Texas A&M-Commerce fell to 31-15 overall and 13-13 in LSC play.
