Rabb throws three TDs to lead Maroon over Gold, 38-31

WICHITA FALLS, TX - The 28th Annual Maroon and Gold Spring Game turned down right offensive Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.

Sophomore-to-be Layton Rabb passed for 287 yards and three touchdowns to lead Maroon to a 38-31 win in a game that featured 945 yards of combined offense including 694 yards through the air.

Each of Rabb's TD passes came after halftime as the Llano product hit Tyrique Edwards (34), Breion Evans (48) and Gary Farquhar for scores to foil two valiant comeback efforts by the Gold squad.

Gold erased a 14-point deficit midway through the second as Quade Coward engineered a seven-place, 65-yard drive culminating with a 10-yard strike to tight end Keone Kalawaia with 4:38 remaining in the opening half.

Walk-on quarterback Xavier Conley pulled Gold even on unlikely drive before the end of the half.

The Pflugerville product connected with Toreano Barnes for 34 yards on second-and-22 from the Gold 7-yard line then found D.J. Myers for 32 yards before hitting a wide open Statron Jones in the end zone to tie the game at 17-17 at the half.

Conley combined to go 9-for-16 for 172 yards and a touchdown while serving as the backup for both sides.

After Rabb's first scoring toss of the second half, Gold rallied to tie the game at 24-24 on a 24-yard strike from Coward to D.J. Myers with 7:53 to go in the third quarter.

But Rabb pushed the lead back to two scores for the Maroon side before Gold answered with a 35-yard hookup from Coward to Jones with 7:18 to go in the fourth quarter.

Coward connected on 17-of-33 passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns but also threw a pair of interceptions.

Sophomore Vincent Johnson led all runners with 70 yards on 14 carries with two touchdowns for the Maroon side.

Jones had six receptions for 84 yards and two touchdowns for Gold while Myers made three catches for 77 yards with a touchdown while Michael Gerst had three receptions for 52 yards

Xavier Land paced Maroon with 89 yards on three receptions while Evans had three catches for 61 yards.

Dontae ArmstrongSir'Vell Ford and Joe Randall paced Gold with eight tackles each while J.P. Cognasiand Jamal Abdul-Kareem made five stops each to lead Maroon.

Midwestern State opens the 2016 season on Saturday, Sept. 3 at Truman State in Kirksville, Mo.
