Vinson a Finalist for NFCA Player of the Year

WICHITA FALLS, TX - Midwestern State senior third baseman Katelyn Vinson has been named a top 25 finalist for the 2016 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II National Player of the Year award, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced Wednesday afternoon.

Vinson has already racked up several accomplishments in her final season playing for Midwestern State, becoming the MSU and Lone Star Conference career home run record holder (65) while also setting new MSU career standards in RBI (221) and total bases (477). Vinson's career numbers also place her high on the NCAA Division II Active Career Leaders list, ranking first in the country in home runs and second in RBI and total bases.

The Southlake native leads the Mustangs this season with a .428 batting average, 49 RBI and 12 home runs in 47 starts. Vinson has also added a team-best 40 walks and a .768 slugging percentage and .558 on base percentage.

While donning the Maroon and Gold, Vinson has garnered three All-LSC honors, NFCA and Daktronics All-Region accolades in 2013 and 2014, and an all-American nod in 2013.

Vinson is one of three players from the South Central Region to appear on the national player of the year top 25 list, joining West Texas A&M senior catcher and City View HS graduate Lacey Taylor and Colorado Mesa senior shortstop Makayla Kovac.

Behind the collaboration between the NFCA and the Division II Head Coaches Committee, and the generosity of Schutt Sports, the award was created in 2015 to honor the outstanding athletic achievement among softball student-athletes throughout Division II.

The field will be narrowed down to 10 finalists on May 6 and three finalists on May 12. The national player of the year will be announced May 17 leading up to the NCAA Division II Championships.

Midwestern State looks to secure a spot in the Lone Star Conference Tournament Friday and Saturday with a four-game series against Texas A&M-Kingsville at Mustangs Park. The series gets underway with a doubleheader Friday at 4 p.m. before a twin bill Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
