Petrolia's Smith Wins Title, Quanah Boys Take Bronze

AUSTIN, TX (KAUZ) -

Petrolia's Breanna Smith won her second career UIL Golf championship Tuesday afternoon at the Roy Kizer Golf Course.

Smith shot matching rounds of 75 and won the Class 2A title by five shots ahead of second-place Ashley Watts of Wellington, and ten shots ahead of bronze medalist Renee Molloy of Memphis.

She earned redemption after falling out of a first-place tie on the 36th hole a year ago, when she was bidding for a repeat. She won the Class 1A championship in 2014 as a sophomore.

Smith is a future Tarleton State TexAnn, having signed with the currently 6th-ranked team on National Signing Day.

The Olney Lady Cubs finished 8th as a team, shooting rounds of 400 and 433, led by Mattie Barrington.

On the boys' side, the Quanah Indians took their first-ever state golf medal, winning bronze on Wednesday. They shot rounds of 322 and 332 for a two-round total of 654, edging Brookeland by nine spots for third. No one was catching Normangee, which won its second-straight title in another runaway, posting a total of 602, 29 shots ahead of second-place Grapeland.

Individually, the top local finisher was Quanah's Mayson Leija, who tied for 7th with a two-round total of 155, just ahead of Archer City's Morgan Wylie, who tied for tenth with a 156 total. Quanah's Hayden Griffin also performed well, with a 157 good for a tie for twelfth. Jace Parmer, Sean Jalomo and J.T. Boyd rounded out Quanah's team, which is coached by Trenton Boyd.

In Class 4A, Graham's Coby Bryant finished 27th individually, shooting a total of 157 at the Onion Creek Golf Club.

The tournament continues Wednesday with Class 1A and 3A, which both will have Texoma representation. The Throckmorton boys will represent Region III-1A at Lions Municipal Course, while three Throckmorton girls advanced as medalists. Munday's Taylor Thompson also qualified out of Region I-1A.

Holliday's Connor Key represents Region II-3A as a medalist and will start Wednesday at the Grey Rock Golf Club.
