MSU Tennis: Both Teams Earn NCAA Berths

Men Take Top Seed, to Host St. Edward's

WICHITA FALLS, TX - Midwestern State will be making its 14th NCAA Tournament appearance since 1998 as the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Selection Committee tabbed the 14th-ranked Mustangs the No. 1 seed in the South Central Region Tuesday evening.

The Mustangs earned the top seed for the third-straight season after posting a 15-8 overall record with six of their 11 wins over Division II opponents coming against nationally-ranked programs in 2016. Midwestern posted a 10-1 record against in-region foes and earned the top seed in the NCAA regional rankings last week after defeating previous-No. 1 Cameron, 6-3, at the MSU Tennis Center on Apr. 20.

Midwestern will host No. 4 seed St. Edward's (Texas) in its fourth-straight NCAA showing Saturday at 2 p.m. at the MSU Tennis Center. The Mustangs defeated the Hilltoppers, 5-2, back on Apr. 15 in Austin.

On the other side of the bracket, No. 2 Cameron will face No. 3 St. Mary's (Texas) at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex Monday in Lawton, Okla. A time has yet to be determined.

The winners of each match will advance to the NCAA Sweet 16 to be held May 18-21 at the Gates Tennis Center and Regency Athletic Complex in Denver, Colo.

Midwestern has advanced to the NCAA Championship site five times in program history - 2001, 2005-06, 2013-14 - with Elite Eight appearances in 2006, 2013 and 2014.

The Mustangs are the fourth MSU men's athletic team to enter the postseason as a No. 1 seed in 2015-16, while all five men's teams have earned NCAA Tournament berths.

Women Get Second Seed, Will Visit Cameron Monday

For the 16th time in the last 19 seasons, the Midwestern State women's tennis team is headed to the NCAA Division II Tournament after earning the No. 3 seed in the South Central Region, the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Selection Committee announced Tuesday evening.

The Mustangs will be making their fourth-straight postseason showing following an 18-9 season and runner-up finish in the Lone Star Conference.

Midwestern will square off against No. 2 seed Cameron for the third time in less than four weeks with a Monday meeting with the Aggies in the NCAA South Central Regional. A time has yet to be determined for the match. The Mustangs fell to the Aggies twice at home this season with a 5-4 defeat during the regular season and a 5-2 loss in the LSC Championship match last weekend at the MSU Tennis Center.

In the other South Central Region matchup, top-seeded St. Mary's (Texas) will play host to No. 4 St. Edward's (Texas) in a rematch of the Heartland Conference Championship in San Antonio.

The winners of the two regional matches will move on to NCAA Round of 16, which will take place May 18-21 at the Gates Tennis Center and Regency Athletic Complex in Denver, Colo.

The Mustangs have punched their ticket to the NCAA Championship site five times in program history including the past three seasons - 2000, 2005, 2013-15 - with a historic run to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2015.
