Memorial Day Meaning

ARCHER COUNTY, TX (KAUZ) - Memorial Day is a day to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
"There have been hundreds of thousands that have made sacrifices," Jerry Martin, Retired Veteran said. "From the Revolutionary War to the War on Terror, it is so important that Americans take the time on Memorial Day to honor them."
Monday morning ceremonies were held in Scotland and Windthorst to honor those soldiers.
Kenneth Simons was in attendance to honor his cousin John Simons.
"John was laying minefields and got killed in an onslaught because of an attack by the SS Panzer Division on January 21st, 1945," Simons said. "He almost made it through three years of war. He only had five months left."
Everyone views the day in a different light.
Alondra Hurtado, a member of the Wichita Falls High School ROTC, said the ceremonies changed her perspective.
"I have never done this before," Hurtado said. "It is really meaningful and something that impacted me because when I think about Memorial Day, I do not think about all of this. It really just changed my outlook on Memorial Day. I am really glad I got to come out here and be a part of the ceremony."
David Teichman, a U.S. Veteran, said those brave men and woman are why we have freedom today.
"I appreciate the people who have given their lives," Teichman said. "Because I love this country, I appreciate it and all the opportunities it has given to me. I know in my soul and heart that unless there were some people that were willing to give their lives for our freedom, that we would not be enjoying the things we have now."
The ceremonies were held by VFW Post 2676 and it's auxiliary members, the legion riders and Wichita Falls High School ROTC.
