AUSTIN, TX (KAUZ) - Cy Schroeder scattered four hits in five innings and Breann Schreiber hit a three-run home run to lead the Windthorst Trojanettes to an 11-1 run-rule win over Crawford in the the UIL Class 2A State Semifinals Wednesday at UT's McCombs Softball Field.
The Lady Pirates (26-6) actually took the lead in the top of the first, with an RBI double by Joani Kohlscheen that scored Bailey Murphy to make it 1-0, but Windthorst (33-3) answered quickly, on an unusual play.
Schreiber singled to center field, advancing to second on a throw to the plate. When Crawford tried to throw her out at second, the ball went into center field allowing Tatum Veitenheimer, who had singled and stolen second, to come in and score. That left Schreiber on third, and she came home on a single by Katie Conrady to give the Trojanettes the 2-1 lead after an inning.
After Schroeder set Crawford down in order in the top of the second, Windthorst gave themselves some breathing room. With runners on second and third, Jenna Glawe reached on what was somewhat harshly ruled an error on the Crawford third baseman to bring in Schroeder and make it a two-run lead.
Then, Schreiber unloaded on a 1-1 pitch from Crawford's Ashton Chambers, depositing it just to the left of the McCombs field scoreboard in center field for a three-run homer to make it a 6-1 lead and give the Trojanettes some cushion.
The next two innings went by uneventfully, with neither team recording a hit, leading to the fifth inning.
With one out and one on, Emily Hise and Brooke Schreiber each singled to load the bases. A wild pitch brought in courtesy-runner Katherine Pitman to make it 7-1, but later in the at-bat Schroeder was walked to re-load the bases. The next batter, Kolbi Martin, was hit by a pitch, forcing in Hise to make it an 8-1 lead and putting the winning run on base.
At that point, Crawford coach Kirk Allen changed pitchers, bringing in freshman Cambree Aguirre to replace Chambers, but Aguirre's inexperienced quickly showed.
She was called for two illegal pitches while walking Tatum Veitenheimer, scoring Brooke Schreiber and Schroeder and moving Martin to third.
Then, while pitching to Jenna Glawe, she was called for one more illegal pitch, bringing in Martin with the clinching run.
Windthorst advances to face Region IV champion Shiner (30-5), who also won via run-rule Wednesday with a 13-2 victory over Region III winner Harleton (33-5) in the second semifinal. The Class 2A State Championship game is set for a 3 p.m. first pitch at McCombs Field on Thursday.
