WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) - ShaeBug Scarberry of Purcell, Oklahoma shot her third-straight round of 68 Thursday to pull away for the Texas-Oklahoma Junior Golf Tournament title.
Starting the day with a 1-shot lead over Hanna Harrison of Plano, she birdied her first two holes and three of her first round, opening up a big lead. She finished with a 4-under round, winning by 8 shots even with a closing bogey on the 9th hole.
She said the quick start helped her settle in to the round.
"It made me relax a lot," she said. "I mean if I was down like that, and the girl that I was chasing went birdie-birdie and pulled that lead away, I'd be worried. But it relaxed me a lot, because then I just went like, 'OK now I can just play golf from here, and they have to chase me now.'
She also reflected on how special this win was for her. "I'm sixteen, and it's my first year playing in the older flight," Scarberry said. "So, it means a lot."
Incoming Midwestern State freshman Lexi Read of Bridgeport shot 74 Thursday to finish in second place, one shot ahead of Harrison, a Dallas Baptist signee.
Fellow future Mustang Cheleen Cousins of Frisco shot 75 Thursday, to finish in 7th place, while Petrolia's Breanna Smith, a Tarleton State signee, shot 76 to finish in 8th and Wichita Christian's Savanah Snyder also shot 76, to finish 10th.
