BAKERSFIELD, CA -

Bolthouse Farms is telling customers across the country not to drink its protein drinks because they could possibly have premature spoilage.

The California-based company is voluntarily recalling 3.8 million bottles, the majority of which are its Protein PLUS shakes. The recall also includes Mocha Cappuccino protein drinks.

The spoilage may cause lumpy appearance, unpleasant taste and foul odor, according to an FDA statement. Customers can return them to the stores where they were purchased for full refunds.

The Protein PLUS shakes have "best by" dates between June 20 and September 18, which can be found on the neck and cap of the bottles. The 15.2-ounce Mocha Cappuccino Perfectly Protein drink has a "best by" date of Sept. 2, and the 32-ounce size has "best by" dates between Aug. 2 and Aug. 3.
