WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) - A Wichita Falls non-profit celebrated a milestone Saturday at the Wichita Falls Railroad Museum.
"It's a new start," Jan Herzog, transport coordinator for Underdog Express said.
This new transport program will send at-risk shelter and rescued dogs from Wichita Falls and surrounding areas to Helping Hounds Dog Rescue in upstate New York.
"We joined or piggybacked a program in Flower Mound, Texas called Love on Wheels," Herzog said.
But after three years of success, Herzog said it was the time the program grow on its own.
"After three years our program has grown enough and we are starting to send more and more dogs. So, it was our time to spin off and operate independently of them," Herzog said.
Emily's Legacy Rescues has sent more than 600 dogs to New York and those dogs are adopted very quickly.
"The last two I sent up last week got adopted the day they showed up," Marcus Hill said.
Hill has been fostering pups since 2009.
"I've got number 68 at my house right now," Hill said.
Herzog said it costs an average of $160 for each dog to be vetted to go on transport and the shelter dogs must be put a foster home before transport. If you're interested in becoming a volunteer to foster click here for more information.
