WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) - Newschannel 6 is not finished celebrating our country and those who serve it. This week's Heroes of Texoma nominee is Devyerre Lewis. She and her twin sister born in April of 1994 had a pact to join the military together.
"We were going to go on the buddy system into the military and I got pregnant so she went by herself," Devya Lewis said.
Devyrre graduated from Rider High School in 2013 and joined the U.S. Army that summer. Although she's only been in for nearly three years, she has been across the country.
"She's been to South Carolina, Alabama, now she's in Killeen," Devya said.
Having to watch her sister live out a dream they planned to do together was hard for Devya.
"It was terrible, I cried every day. I cried like a little baby every day," she said.
But she is proud of what her sister has accomplished.
"My mom wanted her to go into the military and she did," Devya said.
Devyerre and her family live at Fort Hood which allows them to visit often.
"She comes to visit every weekend, so it's good. It's better than being far," Devya said.
Devyerre works as an aviation operation specialist and has made her family very proud.
"Keep up the good work," Devya said.
