WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) - While games in the YMCA"s fall league don't start until December first, practices get underway in the middle of October.
Fall league runs from October to February and consists of one game a week along with one to two practices a week.
This year the Y expects around 150 to 160 teams and accounts the growth to family's outside of Wichita Falls joining the league.
"We get Henrietta, Iowa Park, Archer City, Windthorst, Seymour, a lot of those teams play with us. So it makes it a really big program," said Youth Sports Coordinator, Brenda Armstrong.
Teams are available for kids from the ages of 5-12 years old.
Due to the increased numbers, the YMCA has been able to add a girl's league along with the boy's league.
While the deadline to sign up was on October 3rd, Armstrong says to call anyway if you're interested in signing your child up or volunteering for coaching.
"If they call, we can talk to them and tell them if we have openings. Sometimes we'll start a list of those and if we need players then we'll go ahead and dry them on in," Armstrong said.
One thing Armstrong notes about the program is watching kids that grew up in the YMCA, come back to coach their own kids.
Tyler Wetzel is one of those volunteer coaches.
"I had a lot of fun doing it growing up and I just wanted my kids to have the same opportunity that I did," Wetzel said.
If you're looking to get involved by being a volunteer coach or want more information about the cost, scholarships, and signing up for the fall league, you can contact the YMCA at 940-761-1000.
