WFISD construction underway for safety

WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) - Safety improvements are coming to six Wichita Falls Independent School District campuses in the near future.
Texoma Builders Supply will be redesigning the entryways at the main entrances of the schools, ultimately making the campuses more secure.
The construction is from a bond passed in May of 2015 and includes Franklin, Fowler, Burgess, West Foundation, Old High and Rider.
"We want to make sure that we are doing everything we can to protect the children in our schools when they're with us," Ashley Thomas, WFISD Communications Officer said.
That is why the WFISD is making the improvements.
Thomas said it will change entry to the buildings.
"The goal in these enhancements is to not allow people direct access to the building," Thomas said. "The entryway's are going to be redesigned to funnel visitors into the front office before being allowed access to the rest of the building."
Part of the reason so many locations need improvements is because of the age of the buildings.
"When our buildings were constructed, we didn't have issues like we have today," Thomas said. "So not all of the entryways were built in a manner to funnel parents and guests through the front office first."
These safety and security upgrades are a part of a previously passed bond.
Thomas believes the construction will be done by November, and she said she is looking forward to what the year has in store for the district.
"We're excited about the year, the changes that are taking place and all of the improvements that are going to be made in the safety and security of our kids," Thomas said.
Students will have access directly into the school at the beginning of the day.
However, parents and guests will have to go through the constructed main entrance.
After this phase is completed, Thomas said they will continue to make improvements to other schools on a priority basis.
Kirby, McNeil and Haynes already have the new entrances in place.
