A first half penalty kick for freshman forwardHanna Mattinson was the difference in a 1-0 triumph for Midwestern State over Fort Lewis (Colo.) in the Mustangs' home opener Sunday afternoon at MSU Soccer Field.

Midwestern State (2-1-2) fired three shots on target in the opening period before Mattinson drew a foul from FLC's Keisha Green on the left side of the box to set up the penalty kick in the 40th minute. Mattinson's shot soared into the top left corner of the net past Skyhawks goalkeeper Britt Blomso to give the Mustangs a 1-0 advantage.

Fort Lewis (1-2-1) recorded its lone shot on goal less than a minute into the second period with a strike by Shayla Malecki. The Mustangs defense withstood second half pressure from the Skyhawks, who outshot the Mustangs 9-4 in the second period, to earn the second shutout of the season.
