Wichita Falls High School senior Stephen Gaines is the Week 4 Dr Pepper Player of the Week!
Gaines stepped up big-time in the Coyotes' game last Friday night against 6A Haltom, nearly leading them to a rally from two separate 14-point deficits before they came up just short, 21-17.
In his usual role on offense, Gaines put up 153 rushing yards, but he really shined in a new defensive role.
Playing linebacker for just the second time on varsity, and seeing his first extended playing time there, Gaines returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown that cut the deficit to 21-14 in the second quarter.
Later in the same period, right after a muffed punt had given the Buffalos good field position, Gaines forced and then recovered a fumble by Haltom's quarterback, leading to Alex Ramirez's half-ending field goal that led to the game's final margin.
The Coyotes (0-4) will open District 5-5A play Friday night at home against 1-3 Denison, who are themselves coming off their first win, a 64-60 shootout over Frisco Heritage.
