WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) - Midwestern State goalkeeper Courtney Burnette was named the Lone Star Conference Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week after picking up a pair of shutouts to begin league action, the conference office announced Wednesday afternoon.
Burnette extended her shutout streak to 365:27 in 1-0 road wins over Angelo State and UT Permian Basin last weekend as the Mustangs began LSC play at 2-0 for the first time since 2010. The junior from Irving recorded her fourth-straight shutout and fifth in the last six outings as the Mustangs extended their winning streak to five games for the first time since the 2013 campaign.
Against Angelo State, Burnette matched a career-high 12 saves with seven coming in the second half to help Midwestern earn its first win over the Rambelles since Nov. 1, 2013. Burnette also added two saves in the shutout against UT Permian Basin for the 18th clean sheet of her career, third most in the program record books.
On the season, Burnette leads the LSC and ranks 20th nationally with .625 shutouts per game while ranking second in the conference and 27th in the country with a .592 goals against average.
Midwestern State looks to keep its perfect conference record intact this weekend, hosting Texas Woman's and No. 11 Texas A&M-Commerce at MSU Soccer Field. The Mustangs first square off against TWU in a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday before battling A&M-Commerce for the conference lead Sunday at 1 p.m.
Former Midwestern State All America safety Marqui Christian signed with the Los Angeles Rams Wednesday, less than 24 hours after being released by the Arizona Cardinals.
Christian, a 5th-round pick of the Cardinals in the 2016 NFL Draft, recorded 16 tackles in preseason action but was not active for any of the team's first 3 regular-season games. He was waived on Tuesday as the team needed to players at another position due to injuries.
The Rams visit the Cardinals this weekend, but it is unlikely that Christian will be active on such short notice with a new team.
