Second half surge carries Mustangs to win over St. Mary's

WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) - A total of four goals in the final 22 minutes of play lifted 25th-ranked Midwestern State to a 4-0 shutout win over St. Mary's Saturday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.
 
Midwestern State (7-2-1, 5-1-0 HC) recorded 20 shots and 10 corner kicks in the opening period but St. Mary's (2-5-2, 1-4-1 HC) kept the Mustangs off the board with goalkeeper Jack Moore collecting seven saves in the first 45 minutes of play.
 
In the 69th minute, Gabriel Cavalcante broke a scoreless contest with a shot from inside the box off assists from Christian Okeke and Jacob Hernandez for a 1-0 advantage.
 
The Mustangs added to their lead exactly three minutes later with a strike from Ross Fitzpatrick, his first career goal, for a 2-0 advantage.
 
After recording his first goal with the Mustangs Thursday evening, Alex Mullet netted another score for the Maroon and Gold with a shot from the top of the box off a corner kick from Flavio Guzman in the 82nd minute.
 
With less than five minutes to play, Laurence Chamberlain tacked on a fourth score for the Mustangs with his first goal of the season off assists from Mullet and Kristian Martinez for the 4-0 final.
