Mustangs ranked fourth in AFCA D2 Poll for second straight week

WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) - Midwestern State remained at No. 4 for the second straight week in the latest American Football Coaches' Association Division II Poll released Monday morning.
 
The Mustangs improved to 6-0 for the second consecutive year and for the fourth time in program history claiming a stirring 28-21 win over Angelo State Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.
 
Midwestern State is in the Top 10 for a fourth consecutive week for the first time since spending the last five periods of the 2011 season in the Top 10 reaching as high as second heading into the postseason.
 
MSU is one of eight teams from Super Region Four to receive mention in the poll joining No. 2 Grand Valley State (Mich.), No. 9 Texas A&M-Commerce, No. 11 Ashland (Ohio), No. 22 Wayne State (Mich.) and No. 25 Ferris State (Mich.).
 
Colorado Mines and Southwest Baptist (Mo.) are receiving votes.
 
Midwestern State and West Texas A&M resume the Highway 287 Challenge Cup series Saturday night at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium in Canyon. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.

Fazekas collects Heartland Conference weekly honor

Midwestern State senior goalkeeper Noah Fazekas was tabbed the Heartland Conference Defensive Player of the Week Monday afternoon after recording a career high in saves and tallying a pair of shutouts to help No. 15 Midwestern State to first place in the league standings.

Fazekas doubled his career best in saves Saturday evening in a 2-0 road win against Oklahoma Christian, collecting 10 saves for his third-straight shutout and sixth clean sheet of the season. The Dallas native and Mansfield High product began the week with a 2-0 shutout win over Rogers State at MSU Soccer Field with three stops between the posts.

On the season, Fazekas ranks second in the Heartland Conference and 14th nationally with a 0.64 goals against average and comes in second in the league and 30th in the country with a .810 save percentage.

For his career, Fazekas ranks third in the program record books with a 0.61 goals against average and is fifth in wins with a 19-2-1 career mark.

The weekly honor is the first for Fazekas this season and the second of his career after garnering Lone Star Conference weekly accolades on Oct. 26, 2011.

Midwestern State makes its final road trip of the regular season beginning Thursday as the Mustangs battle second-place St. Edward's at 3 p.m. at Lewis-Chen Family Field in Austin.
