9th Street 2-Way Traffic: One block on 9th Street becomes 2-way to better flow traffic downtown

WICHITA FALLS, TX -

Changes are coming to downtown Wichita Falls in an effort alleviate traffic concerns and confusion.

Business owners in the area said traffic is backed up every weekend because of the layout of the streets, so the traffic department is working to change that.

The traffic department started talking about making the intersection of 9th and Indiana a two way street since summer.  Now that it is finished, shop owners downtown are hopeful this is the first step.

Laci Hawkins said traffic can be a little challenging.

“It's crazy you can't find a parking lot to save your life,” said Hawkins.

Parking is not the only concern.  Another reason traffic is hectic is due to many of the streets being one way, making it difficult to drive downtown.

“Especially here on ninth street,” said Hawkins.  “They are always turning around and going the wrong way.”

In an effort to clear up a lot of confusion, traffic superintendent Mark Beauchamb said they made the block near 9th and Indiana a two-way street.

“This was kind of an effort to relieve some of that stress to be able to be able to get people into and out of businesses as well as the events in the area,” said Beauchamb.

While the change is welcomed by many, the one-way streets didn’t seem to bother everyone.

“I think they need to make all streets two way,” said Hawkins. “So everybody doesn't get confused on which way to go.”

“When you come into small towns they are usually a little older,” said Angie Kirchmeier, who is visiting family in the Falls.  “You can tell just read your signs and know where you're going.  Pay attention!”

As for the future of the other streets in downtown Wichita Falls, we won’t be seeing change anytime soon.

“Right now there is no real advantage of the cost involved in changing over full street is significant,” said Beauchamb.

The change took affect this week and several people who work downtown while they were excited downtown where still unaware.  As for the traffic, it is flowing just like normal on the new two-way street.
