WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) - A pair of late strikes from freshman Adrianna Smith and senior Nicole Coetzer propelled Midwestern State to a season sweep of UT Permian Basin Friday evening with a 2-0 shutout of the Falcons at MSU Soccer Field.

Midwestern State (8-5-2, 5-4-0 LSC) was unable to push one across in the opening period despite creating several good looks at the net with 13 shots, four of which were on goal.

Smith tallied the game-winning goal against UT Permian Basin (1-12-1, 1-9-0 LSC) for the second time this season with a shot from the top of the box into the right corner of the net following a double assist from Coetzer and junior Destinee Williamson in the 73rd minute.

The Mustangs struck again six minutes later with Coetzer recording her fourth score of the season with a shot from the right side of the box off a pass from freshman Hanna Mattinson for a 2-0 score.

"I thought the girls had a good performance and response to last weekend," said MSU head coach Damian Clarke. "The goals came late, but the quality of the movements was high. Adrianna scored a bomb, and the buildup of Hanna and Nicole's play was awesome. We are also happy to earn a shutout."

The MSU defense held the Falcons without a shot until the 69th minute as UTPB managed just two shots for the night. Midwestern State posted its second-highest shot total of the season with 24 attempts while matching a season-best 12 shots on goal.

Midwestern State hosts Angelo State in a 1 p.m. meeting Sunday for Senior Day at MSU Soccer Field. The Mustangs will honor eight seniors who will play their final home game prior to Sunday's kickoff.

MSU Volleyball wins 3rd straight, sweeps UTPB

Midwestern State pushed its winning streak to a season-best three matches Friday evening with a 3-0 victory over UT Permian Basin to earn the season sweep over the Falcons.

Midwestern State (11-12, 5-7 LSC) hit a match-best .321 percentage in the opening set, led by Aerielle Edward's four kills to take a 25-16 win and 1-0 lead in the match. The Mustangs grabbed an 11-4 lead to force a UT Permian Basin (6-16, 2-10 LSC) timeout after back-to-back service aces for Meghan Bettis. MSU stretched its lead to as many as 10 in the first frame after a pair of Christy Carruth aces and a Kristan Aduddell kill before going on to claim the opening set.

A 5-0 run early in the second set helped the Mustangs pull away and take a comfortable lead on the Falcons. Midwestern extended its advantage to 12-4 after an Addison Semer kill before the Falcons went on an 8-4 run to cut their deficit in half. Bettis prevented UTPB from pulling any closer, recording three of her six kills in the set down the stretch to propel the Mustangs to a 25-19 win in game two.

The Mustangs quickly erased an early three-point deficit in set three behind the block of Aduddell and Semer to go point-for-point with the Falcons for much of the first half of the game. MSU broke a 12-12 tie after three kills from Semer to take a 16-13 lead and force a UTPB timeout. The Falcons were unable to pull even with the Maroon and Gold late in the set, only coming within a couple of points on two occasions as the Mustangs recorded the 25-20 win for the sweep.

Edwards led Midwestern State in kills for the 11th time this season with 11 kills while tying a career-high three service aces.

Midwestern State closes out the weekend with 1 p.m. matchup with West Texas A&M tomorrow at the WTAMU Fieldhouse in Canyon.
