Helping Hands: Volunteers help build a house for a family in need

A group from Sheppard Air Force Base gave back to the community Saturday by helping build a house with Habitat for Humanity, and when they arrived, they were in for a surprise.

Volunteers were up bright and early to help build the newest house for a family in need.  Esther Gomez, the owner of the new house applied for the home last year.

“I have my 4 grandchildren and our home is small our electricity is going bad,” said Gomez.   “I just said we can't do this anymore and you know it was small and we are growing and so I said it is time to apply and see if we qualify.”

Over the last few weeks, numerous volunteers have come to lend a hand in building the new home for Gomez and her family.

Helen Tanner was with the group from Sheppard Air Force Base and volunteered for the first time.

“I think it would make anyone feel good,” said Tanner.   “You know feeling like you're giving back to the community.

She said her favorite part of the day was having Esther with them.

“You see who you're doing it for,” said Tanner.   “It's not like some imaginary being that you're making it she is here.”

Tanner said making the decision to come and help was not a hard one.

“We knew we wanted to do something in the community,” said Tanner.  “We found this and we decided to come as many of us that could come.”

Gomez said seeing so many volunteering week after week warms her heart.

“God bless you and thank you so much for taking care of our family and helping us get a new home.”
Gomez said she and her grandchildren hope to be in their new home by the start of next year.
