A 30 years old holiday ritual in Vernon continues this year with new people running the show.

Pat and Glenna Bryant hosted a Thanksgiving and Christmas meal for the community three decades ago following a good year in business.

"We just did it on our own that first year, never dreaming it would continue this many years," Glenna said.

While the Bryant's have enjoyed serving the community for the holidays all these years, they are ready for a break.

"You can see by our age and our gray hair (that) we're getting to the point where we're just a little bit tired," Pat said.

Last year the Bryant's put out the word that they needed someone to take over. After seeing no one else step forward to fill their shoes, Sharon and Billy Goins decided to take the reigns.

"We talked about it, prayed about it and decided this is something that we should do," Sharon said.

The Bryant's were thrilled when the Goins' stepped up.

"They're a very good, religious, community oriented family," Glenna said.

Sharon described the Holiday Spirit Meals project as a well-oiled machine that her family is looking forward to taking over officially this Christmas.

"We're here for the long haul. Hopefully 20 years," Sharon said.

While the Bryant's will no longer be in charge, Pat said they will not be far away.

"We'll always be here to help. You know they're going to take the forefront but if they need us, we're here," Pat said.

Thanks to the Goins family, for the first time the Bryant's will be spending both Christmas and New Years with their daughter and grandchildren in Alabama.

The annual Thanksgiving meal in Vernon will take place on Thanksgiving day at the Wilbarger County Auditorium. There is no charge.
