JACKSBORO, TX (KAUZ) -

Chief Terry McDaniel, with the Jacksboro Police Department, has confirmed a 15-year-old girl is dead after being hit by a car Sunday afternoon.

Chief McDaniel said the girl was struck and killed while walking down the shoulder on the 2100 block of North Main Street in Jacksboro at 3:15 p.m.

He said a vehicle veered off the road, hit the girl and crashed into a creek.

Chief McDaniel said that driver told him he fell asleep at the wheel.

The young girl died at the scene, and the driver of that car and a passenger were treated and released from a local hospital with no injuries.

Chief McDaniel said this investigation is ongoing, and no criminal charges have been made at this point.

No names have been released yet.

He adds, even though school is out this week for Thanksgiving break, grief counselors will be at the Jacksboro Middle School's gym Monday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. for students and the community.
