AUSTIN, TX (KAUZ) - On Tuesday, Texas State Representative James B. Frank filed HB 445. A bill is designed to protect the security and safety of operations at Texas military aviation bases from interference generated by wind energy installations.
Recent installations of wind turbines around Texas are said to be hampering operations and contributing to risks for pilots and other staff at neighboring Air Force bases.
The proposed legislation would address these issues by prohibiting the use of state tax incentives for wind projects in areas within 30 nautical miles of the boundaries of military aviation facilities. Currently, Texas provides a property tax exemption for the "installation or construction of" wind devices that produce and distribute energy.
Wind turbines are believed to cause interference with military radar systems.
