WF city council fills two council positions

WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) - An open seat and a vacancy on the Wichita Falls city council were filled after a long executive session Tuesday.
Eric West is a Training Manager for the 361st Squadron at Sheppard Air Force Base.
That is just one of many reasons why city council members decided to appoint West to the District 1 open seat.
"If you look at what he has done at Sheppard and the way he has excelled out there, we need somebody that has some good leadership qualities like intelligence and vision," Stephen Santellana, Mayor of Wichita Falls said. "Those are all things that Eric possesses that we knew he was going to bring right to council."
"Having me out there and being involved in seeing Sheppard on a day-to-day basis will probably help in discussions," West said.
That was not the only vacancy that was filled.
Brian Hooker, District 3 Councilor, will be the city's new Mayor Pro Tem.
"Brian really wanted to step up and take that position," Mayor Santellana said. "I told the full council that even though Brian is our Mayor Pro Tem, I am going to lean heavily on the full council to fill those needs where the city needs representation in some of the civic organizations."
New District 1 Councilor West is excited and prepared for what the future holds serving the district.
"I can promise informed decision-making," West said. "I don't rush to judgment, I like to get input. But I understand there are things that we need to take immediate action on and sometimes you need to go back and think about things a little more. I am very excited, happy and honored to be part of the team. I really have a lot of respect for current council, previous council and the city staff. I am really looking forward to working with them all."
Mayor Santellana told Newschannel 6 Monday he wanted someone to take his council seat with aspirations of running for re-election in nine months.
When we asked West about that he said he does not want to commit to the job long-term, but if things go as planned he would consider running.
The deadline for applications for the open District 5 seat is December 14th.
Mayor Santellana hopes to fill that spot by the beginning of next year.
