WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) - The start of the 2017 Miracle League season is just under a month away and YMCA organizers are hoping for another fun and successful year.
The season starts on April 1st and Miracle League Director Andrew Steinly is expecting growth.
"We're actually going to be adding two more teams this year. We've usually only had six teams and we've got enough kids to where we're needing to expand and go to eight teams," said Steinly.
This is the fourth year that the YMCA has been in charge of the Miracle League.
Games are played on Saturday mornings at 9, 10, 11, and noon.
The Miracle League is completely funded by the YMCA including the cost to play and a uniform.
"You're getting a full baseball uniform, it's a like a replica. You get baseball pants, baseball jersey, baseball hat. You get everything. We make it really nice for every kid that's involved," said Steinly.
Steinly also said volunteers are a huge part of the Miracle League and sees the volunteers enjoy the game just as much as the kids.
"Actually I have a lot of volunteers that had never done something like this before. They come out and they're not quite sure what to do but after the first couple of minutes they beg me to come back," said Steinly.
The Miracle League was started to help those with special needs be able to join a team and play an organized sport.
The games are played on a wheelchair friendly rubber baseball field for protection against injuries.
Miracle League is open to all student-aged kids with special needs.
The deadline to sign up is March 6th.
