Two Mustangs earn LSC tennis honors

Duff repeats as LSC Player of the Week

Midwestern State freshman Bianca Duff repeated as the the Lone Star Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week Thursday afternoon after posting a 6-0 record while leading the 21st-ranked Mustangs to an undefeated week.

The Geelong, Australia native earned her first career win at No. 2 singles over the 20th-ranked player out of the Central Region in Southwest Baptist's Lani Tuemmers, 6-4, 6-1, to help the Mustangs to a 5-4 upset win over the 11th-ranked Bearcats on the road Saturday. Duff also claimed singles wins over Northwest Missouri State's Aniek Kolen, 7-5, 6-0, and No. 43 Tarleton State's Elena Preadca, 6-0, 6-0, in a 9-0 sweep of the TexAnns. On the season, the 19th-ranked Duff sports a team-best 5-1 record.

In doubles, Duff and sophomore Maddy Coffman continued their perfect run in doubles, improving to 6-0 with three wins on court two including an 8-0 victory over Southwest Baptist to highlight the week.

Midwestern State begins a four-match road swing over spring break beginning Wednesday with a 10 a.m. (CST) match against No. 14 Valdosta State at the VSU Tennis Courts in Valdosta, Ga.

Palacios earns first LSC Player of the Week honor

Midwestern State freshman Angel Palacios earned his first Lone Star Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week nod Thursday after recording a 4-0 singles mark including three wins over regionally-ranked players.

The Piedras Negras, Mexico native helped the 15th-ranked Mustangs avenge a 2016 NCAA quarterfinal loss to No. 20 Ferris State at home Tuesday with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 win over the Midwest Region's 11th-ranked Vasil Surduk at No. 2 singles for his sixth-straight win.

Palacios took down two ranked players out of the Central Region in Southwest Baptist's No. 6 Chris Blodig (6-4, 4-6, 7-5) and Northwest Missouri State's No. 11 Mauro Tete (6-2, 4-6, 6-2). The Everman (Texas) High product also tallied his first career win at No. 1 singles Monday with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Doane's Kris Kiland. On the season, Palacios sports a team-best 6-1 singles record with a 4-0 mark against regionally-ranked opponents.

In doubles, Palacios posted a 2-2 record at No. 3 with wins alongside Denney Norrie and Dillon Pineda to finish the week at 6-2 overall.

Midwestern State continues its challenging slate next week with a four-match road trip over spring break beginning Wednesday with a matchup against No. 5 Valdosta State at 10 a.m. (CST) at the VSU Tennis Courts in Valdosta, Ga.
