WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) -

Work is beginning in Wichita Falls on phase three of the city's Sanitary Sewer Evaluation Study.
In 2007, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, also known as the T.C.E.Q., approached the city about joining in the program.
Since they have, they have seen their sewage overflows decrease over 50 percent.
Their hope is phase three will continue that trend, and they say you can help.
"If we are seeing that the sanitary sewer overflows are due to trash or grease, we go back and tell the citizens how to deal with that trash and how to deal with the grease," Daniel Nix, the Utilities Operations Manager said.
If grease and trash is not disposed of properly, sewage can end up in the streets.
It can also run into people's houses, along with streams and lakes, contaminating the water and causing health hazards.
That is part of the reason why the city is continuing the sewer study.
"The ultimate goal through all of it is to lower those sanitary sewer overflows with the ultimate goal of being zero," Nix said.
However, Nix and Rehabilitation Superintendent, Nicki Lowery, said that goal is nearly impossible to reach.
In 2007, the overflow numbers were in the 50's and are now in the 30's.
Their goal is decrease it to 12.
But it all starts with properly disposing of trash and grease.
"If we can prevent the grease and the trash from entering the system, that helps us tremendously," Lowery said.
That is why the city has started two campaigns.
"One is "Can the Grease Campaign", where we educate the public on what they do with grease from their cooking," Nix said.
The other is "I'm A Toilet Not A Trash Can."
It is a campaign informing the public on what to flush and not to flush.
Nix is happy with the citizens efforts.
"They do the right thing," Nix said. "It's been a consistent thing with them. As always through the drought, they did the right thing. And with this sanitary sewer work that we are doing, we are seeing them do the right thing for this also."
The city has pamphlets for both campaigns.
They include all the information you need, as well as a lid for your can of grease to throw away and a grease scraper.
Lowery said once they reach their goal of 12 overflows per year, they want to continue to decrease the number as low as they can get it.
