Mustangs cruise to 8-1 victory over Metro State

WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) - Midwestern State collected its second South Central Region win of the season Tuesday as the 21st-ranked Mustangs rolled to an 8-1 victory over Metro State (Colo.) at the MSU Tennis Center.

Midwestern State (8-3) set the stage early with sophomore Maddy Coffman and freshman Bianca Duff improving to 11-0 on the season with an 8-2 thumping of Tabitha Porter and Valerie Valencia at No. 2 doubles. On court three, sophomore Greta Lazzarotto and freshman Ashley Ramirez followed with an 8-5 victory over Mackenzie Hotan and Linying Xiao for a 2-0 MSU advantage.

Metro State (8-5) claimed its lone point of the day with a narrow victory at No. 1 doubles with Emily Kerr and Courtney Wright defeating junior Daria Panferova and sophomore Eirini Kontaki in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (6).

Duff, Panferova and Kontaki each tallied straight-set wins to begin singles play with Kontaki recording the clincher at No. 2 with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Porter for her eighth-straight win to move to 9-2 overall. Duff earned the first point for the Mustangs in singles with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Wright at No. 3 while Panferova took down Valencia, 6-1, 6-2, at the top spot.

On court four, Coffman rallied from a first set defeat against Kerr to post a 5-7, 6-0, 10-7 win for her fourth-straight victory. Ramirez pushed the MSU advantage to 7-1 following a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Ainsley Winterrowd at No. 6 singles.

Lazzarotto closed out the match at No. 5, rallying from a 9-5 deficit in the super tiebreaker to earn a 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 result over Xiao.

Midwestern State travels to the Sooner state for a pair of matches Saturday against host Oklahoma Baptist and Newman (Kan.) at the OBU Tennis Courts in Shawnee, Okla. The Mustangs first square off against OBU at 10 a.m. before a 3 p.m. match against Newman.

Mustangs outlast Roadrunners with 6-3 victory at home

Midwestern State recorded a 6-3 victory over in-region rival Metro State (Colo.) in its return to the MSU Tennis Center Tuesday with the 15th-ranked Mustangs taking two of three doubles matches while earning four straight-set wins in singles play.

The ninth-ranked tandem of senior Ramon Toyos and sophomore Dillon Pineda led Midwestern State (7-5) to its first point of the afternoon with an 8-6 victory over Josh Graetz and Joey Tscherne at No. 1 doubles. Sophomore Dylan Hall and freshman Angel Palacios followed with an 8-5 triumph on court two over Sam Stember and Keenan Kaltenbacher to extend the lead to 2-0.

Metro State (6-4) avoided the doubles sweep with Calum Hayes and Alejandro Martinez-Morilla defeating senior Chris Norrie and freshman Denney Norrie, 8-5, at No. 3.

Hall and Toyos carried the Mustangs to a 4-1 advantage after both recording straight-set wins to begin singles action. Hall took down Stember on court four with a 6-3, 6-0 victory while No. 5 Toyos claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win over Graetz at No. 1 singles.

The Roadrunners postponed a match-clinching win for the Mustangs as Tscherne posted a 7-5, 7-6 (5) victory over Palacios at No. 2 for a 4-2 match.

However, Norrie came through for MSU with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Kaltenbacher on court five to seal the victory for the Maroon and Gold.

The Roadrunners earned their second point of the evening at No. 3 singles with Martinez-Morilla pulling out a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (5) decision over junior Vasudev Vijayaraman.

Pineda closed out the match for the Mustangs with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Hayes at No. 6 for the 6-3 final.
