AUSTIN, TX (KAUZ) - Midwestern State golfers recorded three sub-70 scores as the Mustangs sit second after the first 36 holes at the St. Edward's Invitational held at the par-70, 6,530-yard Onion Creek Club's North Course.

MSU carded impressive team totals of 282 and 285 for a 7-over total of 567, but are 12 strokes off of the pace of tournament leading Cameron.

"There was very little wind and the greens were very receptive," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "It's a course that if you're hitting off the tee box with accuracy, you're going to score low."

Junior Trip Hobson kept a tidy card on the Back Nine combining for five birdies and 13 pars over both rounds to tie for eighth with an even-par total of 140 marking scores of 69 and 71.

Senior Jared Baker was 4-over through his first 12 holes of golf, but rode the wave of six birdies over the two rounds to work his way into the Top 10 with tallies of 72 and 68 to match Hobson.

"Jared got in stride and started feeling more comfortable with his driver throughout the day and really got going," Ray said. "It's a fun golf course to play. You can't afford to play safe at this level to compete."

Junior Dominick Haskins matched a field-best 11 birdies over the opening two rounds notching a season-best, 2-under 68 in the first round before battling his way to a 4-over 74 in the second round to tie for 14th with a 2-over total of 142.

Sophomore Clayton Meyers recovered from an opening round 76 to notch a team countable score of 72 in the second to tie for 47th, while senior Thomas Smith delivered the fourth countable score with a 73 in the first round then fired a 77 to tie for 53rd.

"Our guys battled all day," Ray said. "Clayton gave us a quality round playing his last five holes at 2-under. We've struggled all year to find a No. 5 guy with a quality score. Clayton did that today and I'm really proud of him."

Sophomore Chance Craig carded rounds of 74 and 78 for a 12-over total of 152 competing as an individual medalist only.

Rogers State senior Hagen Barmasse (70-66) and Cameron sophomore Dario Gabriel (68-68) top the individual leaderboard with matching 4-under totals of 136.

Midwestern State is seeing its first action in four weeks, but the Mustangs compete in each of the next three weeks.

"We've worked hard the last several weeks so the guys could get their games in shape," Ray said. "We haven't played our best golf with this team yet."

The final round of the St. Edward's Invitational begins with a shotgun start Tuesday morning at 8:30.
