At least 12 dead in head-on collision near San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, TX (KAUZ) - At least 12 people were killed in a head-on collision near San Antonio Wednesday afternoon.

DPS officials said a Dodge PU Dully was heading northbound on U.S. 83 and the church bus was traveling southbound on U.S. 83 just south of RR 1050.

Both vehicles hit head-on around 12:30 p.m.

KENS 5 TV is reporting the words, "First Baptist Church New Braunfels" are written on the side of the bus involved.

Senior citizens from that church were reportedly returning from a retreat.

DPS officials said there were 14 people on board.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott released this statement about the accident.

"Cecilia and I extend our deepest condolences to the victims and the families of those involved in today's tragic event. We are saddened by the loss of life and our hearts go out to all those affected. We thank the first responders working on the scene in the wake of this unimaginable tragedy, and ask that all Texans join us in offering their thoughts and prayers."

The crash caused U.S. 83 north to close near Garner State Park according to the Uvalde County Sheriff's Office.
