WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) - The jury found Willie Maurice Hervey, Jr. guilty of First-Degree Murder in the shooting death of Mark Austin Hawkins in 2014.
It took the jury more than three and a half hours to reach their verdict.
Many in the courtroom burst into tears when the verdict was read. Hawkins mother looked to the sky as she heard the word "guilty."
Hervey's family and friends put their hands to their heads and cried uncontrollably.
Sentencing will take place Wednesday at 8:30 a.m.
The jury included seven men and five women.
Both sides gave their closing statements at 8:30 a.m Tuesday.
The prosecutors told the jury Hervey's story of a struggle was a "con" citing the multiple times he changed his story.
The defendants counter-argued Hervey did not know he shot the victim and he intended to pay him back for the marijuana he took.
Both sides rested Monday afternoon in the 89th District Court.
Deliberations began just after noon Tuesday and the verdict was reached just after 3:30 p.m.
The sentencing phase will determine whether Hervey will serve five to 99 years or life in prison.
