WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) - Midwestern State closed out its regular season home slate in style Saturday morning with a 7-2 win over No. 39 Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) on Senior Day at the MSU Tennis Center.
Prior to the match, the MSU men's tennis program recognized seniors Ramon Toyos and Chris Norrie, who have combined for 207 career dual wins in their four years donning the Maroon and Gold while finishing as one of just two senior classes to place two players in the top 15 in career wins.
The 21st-ranked Mustangs (12-6) earned their sixth-straight win over a Division II opponent, opening the day with a doubles sweep.
The duo of Toyos and Dillon Pineda gave Midwestern State an early advantage with an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles to improve to 8-2 on the season. Dylan Hall and Angel Palacios followed on court two with an 8-2 rout for their eighth win of the season before Chris and Denney Norrie capped off the sweep with a come-from-behind 8-6 victory at No. 3.
It didn't take long before MSU clinched the match in singles play with 9th-ranked Toyos extending the Mustangs lead to 4-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over the Central Region's No. 7 Lennart Lonnemann at the top position. With his 117th career dual victory, Toyos moved into a tie for seventh on the all-time wins list alongside Brian Holcomb (1997-2000). Palacios recorded the clincher soon after following a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Luis Chab on court two.
Norrie also finished with an undefeated record on the day with a 6-2, 6-1 result at No. 5 singles over Nair Adi for his 90th career win.
Trailing 6-0, Ouachita Baptist (4-10) went on the board with a super tiebreaker win at line six with Andre Stefano defeating Daniel Gallivoda, 6-2, 2-6, 10-6.
Pineda earned MSU's seventh point of the match at No. 4 with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Dan Kaplun before Juan Moncada closed out the match for the Tigers by pulling out a 7-5, 2-6, 10-8 victory over Hall at No. 3.
Midwestern State wraps up the regular season with a five-match road swing beginning Tuesday with a 2 p.m. contest against No. 25 Cameron at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex in Lawton, Okla.
Midwestern State extended its win streak to 10 matches with its fifth sweep of the season following a 9-0 victory over Southern Nazarene (Okla.) Saturday in the home finale.
Midwestern State (16-3) was dominant from start to finish in its rout of the Crimson Storm, finishing its home slate with a perfect 10-0 record to match the most home wins in a single season along with the 2013 and 2014 teams. It was the eighth undefeated regular season for the Mustangs in program history.
MSU surrendered just four games in doubles play to take a quick 3-0 advantage in the match.
Greta Lazzarotto and Ashley Ramriez made quick work of Judit Mas and Trista LeGrande, 8-1, on court three for their 10th-straight win to move to 17-2 on the season.
At No. 1 doubles, Maddy Coffman and Bianca Duff continued their impressive undefeated run to 19-0 on the year with an 8-1 result over Polina Chala and Noelia Gomez, the Central Region's 10th-ranked duo.
Daria Panferova and Eirini Kontaki finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win over Anna Garcia and Dragana Samardzic at No. 2.
The Mustangs coasted with straight-set wins on all six courts in singles play with Ramirez and Lazzarotto helping the Mustangs clinch their 10th-straight win to match the second-longest win streak in program history. Ramirez posted her 10th-straight victory at No. 6 while Lazzarotto won her 11th in a row. On court four, Coffman improved to a team-best 16-3 with her 12th-straight victory.
Midwestern State begins a five-match road swing to close out the regular season Monday with a 2 p.m. match against No. 24 Cameron at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex in Lawton, Okla.
No. 2 Angelo State earned a series sweep over Midwestern State with a pair of wins Saturday afternoon at Mayer Field.
GAME 1 RECAP
Madison Greenwell went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored to carry Angelo State to a 6-2 win in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.
Angelo State (40-4, 17-3 LSC) scored six unanswered runs with a four-run second inning to erase a two-run deficit. A Greenwell triple to left center field propelled the Rambelles to a 3-2 lead with one out before an RBI bunt by Bailey Wallace capped off the second inning for ASU to grab a 4-2 advantage.
Angelo added to its lead with two runs in the fourth on a single by Courtney Barnhill for a 6-2 score.
Midwestern State (17-22, 8-15 LSC) went in front 2-0 in the top of the second. Kelsey Knox led off the frame with a single before advancing to third on an error in the ASU outfield. Carli Woolsey drew a walk before Misty Muniz reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Knox to score on an error at third base. A sac fly by Lauren Lindgren in foul territory allowed the Mustangs to plate their second run of the game.
