WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) -

A woman is behind bars after police said she left a 6-month-old baby in her vehicle for 12 minutes.

Thursday Wichita Falls Police officers were called out to the United Supermarket on Old Iowa Park road for a high priority check welfare call.

Witnesses told dispatchers that an infant was alone in a vehicle that was not running and the windows were rolled up.

Police on scene determined the vehicle was also left unlocked.

Shortly after officers arrived at the scene Anita Yanez, 32, came out of the store. Yanez told police she forgot the baby was in the vehicle when she walked into the grocery store. She told them she had only been in the store for around ten minutes.

Officers checked surveillance footage and determined she had been in the store for approximately twelve minutes.

In the arrest affidavit officers states at the time of the incident, the temperature outside was 74 degrees Fahrenheit and that the vehicle was parked in what they knew to be a high crime area.

Yanez was arrested without incident and taken to the Wichita County Jail charged with Abandoning or Endangering Child.
