Long ball carries TWU to series win over Mustangs on Senior Day

Texas Woman's slugged its way to a series win over Midwestern State Friday afternoon, recording 24 runs on 30 hits in a doubleheader sweep on Senior Day at Mustangs Park.

With the two losses, Midwestern State was denied a chance to make its 13th Lone Star Conference Tournament appearance being eliminated from postseason contention.

Between games, the Mustangs honored four-year letterwinners Erin Knox, Taylor Bermudes and Jennifer Quintero in their final home appearances donning the Maroon and Gold. In four seasons, the trio helped the Mustangs to 103 victories, two LSC Tournament appearances and a NCAA Tournament showing in 2014.

GAME 1 RECAP
Texas Woman's took advantage of four Midwestern State errors to push across five unearned runs in a 10-8 win over the Mustangs in game one of Friday's doubleheader.

Texas Woman's (25-16, 13-9 LSC) pulled away from MSU in the fifth inning with four runs on five hits to break a 4-4 tie. An RBI double for Alexis Elizondo propelled the Pioneers to a 5-4 lead before a single up the middle for Morgan Harrison pushed the TWU advantage to 6-4. A double to right center for Nicole Nordie capped off the inning with two additional runs crossing the plate to double up the Mustangs.

Midwestern State (18-24, 9-17 LSC) cut its deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run home run for Erin Knox, her fourth of the season.

The Pioneers pushed two across in the seventh with a Tara Solomon double stretching the TWU lead to 10-6. The Mustangs rallied in their final at bat with Kelsey Knox plating two on a single to right but MSU was unable to pull any closer.

The Mustangs opened up the game with Kelsey Knox driving in Taylor Bermudes who singled earlier in the first.

TWU scored two runs on two errors in the top of the second while Solomon drove another in on a double to left for a 3-1 lead. However, the Mustangs responded in their half of the second with Erin Knox delivering a bases loaded single to score one before the Mustangs added two more runs on a TWU error in the outfield to take a 4-3 lead. The Pioneers evened the game back up in the third after an infield error by the Mustangs.

GAME 2 RECAP
Texas Woman's blasted four home runs to overcome an early 2-0 hole with a combined 11 runs in the third and seventh innings to clinch a series win over Midwestern State with a 14-4 win in the finale.

Taylor Bermudes launched her third home run of the season in her final appearance at Mustangs Park with a two-run shot in the first inning to lift Midwestern State (18-25, 9-18 LSC) to an early lead.

However, Texas Woman's (26-16, 14-9 LSC) took control in the third with six runs on six hits, highlighted by a grand slam by Hazel Puempel and a two-RBI double for Harrison.

Walks for Taylor Mordecai and Misty Muniz and a single for Kelcee Thompson loaded the bases for MSU with two outs before Amanda Thomas earned a walk to drive in a run for the Mustangs in the third for a 6-3 game.

Puempel added her fifth RBI of the game in the fourth with a double to right field before a long ball for Nordie plated two more runs for the Pioneers for a 9-3 contest.

Amanda Thomas recorded MSU's second home run of the game in the sixth inning for her first homer of the season over the left field fence.

Back-to-back homers for Nordie and Tylia Sylestine helped the Pioneers to five runs in the seventh for a 14-4 final.

Mustangs remain undefeated in LSC play with sweep of UTPB

Midwestern State moved to 4-0 in Lone Star Conference play Friday with its sixth sweep of the season in a 9-0 victory over UT Permian Basin at the Bush Tennis Center.

The 15th-ranked Mustangs (18-4, 4-0 LSC) made quick work of the Falcons (6-11, 1-3 LSC), dropping just one game in doubles play before winning in straight sets on all six singles courts.

The duo of Maddy Coffman and Bianca Duff earned their 20th win of the season following an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles to give the Mustangs an early 1-0 advantage. On court three, Greta Lazzarotto and Ashley Ramirez claimed their 13th-straight doubles win to also push their win total to 20 with an 8-0 victory. At No. 2 doubles, Daria Panferova and Eirini Kontaki finished the sweep with an 8-0 win.

In singles, Kontaki took care of Andrea Villalobos at No. 2 with a 6-0, 6-0 victory before Coffman earned her team-best 18th win of the season with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Krissy Chavez to clinch the match for the Mustangs.

MSU finished off the match with straight-set victories from Panferova, Ramirez, Lazzarotto and Anna Claire Gerletti for the 9-0 victory.

Midwestern State looks to clinch the No. 1 seed for next weekend's LSC Tournament tomorrow with a 9 a.m. (CST) match against Western New Mexico at the WNMU Tennis Courts in Silver City.
