WICHITA FALLS, TX - School is out for the summer and the Wichita Falls area food bank wants to make sure kids who rely on school lunches are still getting fed.
About one in every five children in Wichita Falls does not know where their next meal is coming from, so the food bank is helping close that gap with "Kid's Cafe."
Charles Lonon is the assistant director at the central boys and girls club in Wichita Falls. The club is special to him.
"I was a club kid," said Lonon. "It was kind of normal to say hey let me work with kids and it's been a joy."
He wants those kids to be taken care of and not go home hungry. Kid's Cafe is an organization that feeds kids every day in Wichita Falls.
You can find these lunches at every Boys and Girls club. Ben Diechoff runs the program. He says summertime is always busy.
"During the school year you know schools offer free breakfast and lunch program," said Diechoff. "During the summer time, that's really cut back. So, during the summer it's really important that we fill that gap."
"We have kids that probably won't eat today," said Lonon. "Here they get to eat twice."
At the central Boys and Girls club, close to 100 kids were fed Friday morning. On the menu were chicken nuggets, mashed potatoes, and mixed veggies.
"It helps them get the nutrients they need," said Lonon.
Both Diechoff and Lonon agree, seeing a child with a smile on their face after getting a meal is their dessert.
"You go home at the end of the day and just feel really good," said Diechoff. "I helped feed over 400 kids today that wouldn't have gotten a meal otherwise."
"When they eat this meal here they feel better," said Lonon. "They have fun because that is the number one rule here at the club."
In 2016 the food bank gave out more than 120,000 meals to hungry kids in Wichita Falls. Wichita Falls area food bank officials say they are always looking for help.
If you want to get involved in helping the kids cafe, they say the best thing you can do is make a donation to the food bank.
